Stone
Wheel engraving is a technique of incising or carving the surface of glass with
an abrasive wheel. The glass to be decorated is held by hand against the rotating
wheel which "cuts" the surface through an abrasive action. A constant drip of
water is applied to the glass as a coolant and to control silica dust. A large
number of wheels of differing thickness and diameter are utilized. The profiles
are previously shaped for the specific cuts desired. By the appropriate manipulation
of the handheld glass object against the rotating wheel, the desired cuts can
be made. Several different stone wheel are typically required to achieve a particular
design. Brilliant cutting and "cut" glass involve similar equipment and techniques.
